London | Britain is set to follow Australia’s lead and ban teenagers from social media platforms, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer also threatened tech giants with new laws if they failed to stop children from sending and receiving sexually explicit images.
Starmer is expected to announce the social media ban within days, as he looks to leave a legacy amid a growing likelihood that he will be replaced as prime minister within the next few months.
The twin moves are the latest in a campaign that has pitted democratically elected governments around the world against the transnational tech industry, amid growing alarm over their power, lack of accountability and the corrosive impact of social media on societies and users, particularly still-developing young minds.
